"Middlesex", Jeffrey Eugenides second novel, tells the story of Calliope, a male-pseudo hermaphrodite. But the novel does not deal with a narrow political issue or become a polemic and gender or sex. The county was in the Domesday Book and it was divided into six hundreds (these were subdivisions of the county) which were Edmonton, Elthorne, Gore, Hounslow, Ossulstone and Spelthorne. Middlesex was mainly agricultural, with the alluvial soil of its boundary rivers, and the clay of the Thames Basin. Middlesex debuted to widespread critical acclaim and was a best-seller, although its sales didn’t pick up until it began winning awards. Most notably, Eugenides won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and was a finalist for the fiction category of the National Book Critics Circle Award.
